The Red Room and the Gold Room
The Red Room was a nationally known and locally popular bar owned by George E. Hauger. The bar regularly featured drag performances, advertised in both the Albatross and the Nuntius, and is visible in national guides like Bob Damron’s 1968 Address Book. On January 2 and 23, 1971, the Houston chapter of the Gay Liberation Front picketed the Red Room for not admitting clients of color. Under the management of Ken Paul The Red Room also began having regular drag shows starting in 1971. It closed in 1974 and was replaced by the Odd's & End's bar.
Characterized by Ciao Travel magazine in 1974 as a “historically black” bar, the Golden Nugget was operated by Paul Stewart as the Golden Nugget in 1968 and later transformed by Joseph Andrepont into the Gold Room. The Gold Room was also listed in the This Week's Supporters section in the first issue of This Week In Texas.
